2.2 Particulars of Organization
(1) Objective of the Institute:
The main objectives of CNCI are:
1. To spread cancer awareness aiming prevention and control.
2. To promote cancer prevention, cutting edge diagnosis: modern treatment, research, training and education in oncology.
3. To impart post graduation and paramedical education in all branches of oncology.
4. To have collaboration with National and International organizations in prevention, control and cure of cancer.
(2) Brief history of the Institute:
Chittaranjanjan National Cancer Institute , Kolkata is a premier institute located at the heart of the city. This institute has a rich heritage and a glorious past. During that time, with the help and support of DR. B.C.Roy ,an eminent physician and then Chief Minister of West Bengal , the foundation of the present day chittaranjan Cancer Hospital (CCH) was laid. The hospital was formally inaugurated by Prof. Madam J.Curie in January02, 1950 and named after Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, as a tribute to and in acknowledgement of enormous donation of his land and property for the cause. Initially this was a Cancer treatment centre which gradually expanded its activities in basic and clinical research with the assistance from government funding organizations. This eventually led to the founding of the Chittaranjan National Cancer Research Centre(CNCRC) funded by Government of India in 1957, which was committed to basic research on cancer. The chittaranjan Cancer Hospital and Chittaranjan National Cancer Centre functioned as separate entities in adjacent building until their merger in 1987 and emergence of Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) with the objective of serving as a premier Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) for the Eastern Region of the country.

2.3. Organizational Structure:
Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) is an autonomous Institution under administrative control of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India and jointly financed by both Govt. of India and Govt. of West Bengal.
The Society constituted by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India runs the Institute through a Governing body(GB) in accordance with the memorandum of Association. The Union Health Minister is the chairman of GB.
The Rules and Regulations are framed by GB in the form of Recruitment Rules, Academic, Administrative and Financial Bye laws etc.
